History and stories about Dahmen
Mecklenburg Switzerland looks back on a long and eventful past. As an ancient cultural landscape, it was already settled in the Middle Stone Age. For many generations, people shaped the appearance of this region through their way of life, their industriousness and their architecture. The early modern period was particularly formative, when in the 18th and 19th centuries, landowners had a decisive influence on the development of the villages. During this period, not only stately manor houses and their farm buildings were built, but also carefully landscaped parks and simple day laborers' cottages, which still define the typical village image today.
The village of Dahmen is a prime example of this development. An important chapter in the village's history was opened at the end of the 19th century when Hubert von Thiele-Winckler built a sugar factory together with two cousins from the von Maltzahn family. This project was not only a sign of entrepreneurial initiative, but also revitalized the village and gave it new economic impetus, the effects of which can still be felt today.
If you would like to find out more about the history of Dahmen and the surrounding countryside, you can take part in a guided walk. A ranger from the neighboring Rothenmoor leads interested visitors through the village. Exciting details from the past and present are revealed on the circular route. The meeting point for this hike is on July 18 at 10 a.m. in Dahmen at the sports field near the fisherman.
