Poems as if Carved from a Different Wood: Reliefs – Sculptures – Verses by Thomas Lesti

The Feldberger Land e. V. Cultural Association invites you to a special exhibition in which sculptor Thomas Lesti combines visual art and poetry in a very unique way. Thomas Lesti was born in Mirow and now lives in Neu-Käbelich. After many years working in Thuringia and Berlin, he returned to Mecklenburg because, as he says, he has always felt a connection to the landscape and life in this region. His artistic work—whether in sculptures and reliefs or in poetry—always found a place alongside his professional commitments.

In this exhibition, Thomas Lesti presents sculptures and reliefs from recent years. As he explains, these works rarely arise from a specific intention. Often, he finds a piece of wood or even an animal skull that he considers too valuable to throw away, so he keeps these artifacts. When he then discovers motifs in his surroundings that intuitively seem to fit one of his pieces of material, a basic idea emerges that demands to be realized. During the creative process, this idea can evolve or even change, so that the actual result is often not determined until the very end.

In terms of content, the artist develops his own concepts or draws on artistic, literary, and mythological themes from various eras, which he “reimagines,” as he puts it. The range of themes spans from the Renaissance to the 20th century. Thus, his works bear titles such as “Eos,” “Faun,” “Fliegenherr,” or “Lingua.” Once the artist has lived with his finished works in his home environment for a while, poems about the objects sometimes emerge during a second phase of engagement. These poems describe the sculptural work from yet another perspective or are connected in some way to the original idea. As Thomas Lesti explains, this form of exploration allows him to embrace and internalize his own objects even more deeply.

For the artist, working on his pieces is a deeply tactile experience. As he works with the materials, he penetrates deeply into the substance with his hands through stroking, touching, and feeling, so that this creative process is marked by intense moments of “comprehension” for him. He wishes to convey this expansion of sensory perception to visitors of the exhibition as well and expressly invites them not only to look at the exhibited objects but also to touch them, so that sensation and emotion can truly merge.

The Feldberger Land Cultural Association is pleased to present the unusual and poetic works of Thomas Lestis and cordially invites you to the exhibition opening on November 6, 2026, at 7:00 p.m.
