Along with Alice Tegnér and Elfrida Andrée, Amanda Maier was one of the Swedish women who made a name for themselves as composers as early as the late 19th century—she was even the first woman in Sweden to pass the music director’s exam, and performed her own violin concerto in 1876 at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig under Carl Reinecke. Her husband, the German-Dutch composer Julius Röntgen—who was connected to Johannes Brahms and remained friends with Edvard Grieg throughout his life—supported her in this endeavor.

The Phaeton Piano Trio—three internationally acclaimed soloists associated with the Kronberg Academy and the Royal Academy of Music in London, who have performed at venues such as the Frick Collection in New York and the Library of Congress in Washington — frames Maier’s work with two trios by male composers that aptly reflect her brilliance: those by Franz Berwald, a contemporary of Schubert from Stockholm, and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, whose D minor Trio ranks among the most virtuosic works of this genre.
