Joachim Nicolas Eggert: Sextet in F minor, Op. 6 (clarinet, horn, violin, viola, cello, double bass)

Carl Nielsen: Serenata in vano

Ludwig van Beethoven: Septet in E-flat Major, Op. 20 (clarinet, bassoon, horn, violin, viola, cello, double bass)

The composer Joachim Nicolas Eggert found himself moving directly from Vorpommern to Sweden. He was born in 1779 in Gingst on the Island of Rügen, the son of a shoemaker, and served as court Kapellmeister to the Swedish king in Stockholm from 1807 to 1812. One might call him a “Swedish Beethoven,” for as a conductor he premiered Beethoven’s symphonies in Sweden and drew inspiration from Beethoven’s music—and all this happened almost simultaneously: his Beethoven was performed in Stockholm in 1808, while the Fifth Symphony premiered in Vienna that same year.

Thus, the excellent Franz Ensemble—named after Franz Schubert and awarded the OPUS Klassik prize for its recordings of rediscovered chamber music—presents a magnificent and entertaining Swedish serenade centered on Beethoven.
