Lecture series "University in the Town Hall" / Speaker: Prof. Dr. Josephine Thomas (Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences)

In her lecture as part of the "University in the Town Hall" series, Prof. Dr. Josephine Thomas (Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences) will talk about "AI for the power grid of the future".

The energy transition is in full swing: more and more electricity is being generated from renewable sources and we are increasingly relying on electrical devices - from e-cars to heat pumps. This poses new challenges for our electricity grid. Whereas it used to be relatively easy to estimate how much energy would be needed where at certain times of day and how much coal and uranium would have to be used to meet demand, renewable energies are weather-dependent and distributed across many small plants. In addition, we all want to be individually electrically mobile and use electricity-powered heat pumps for heating. How can we ensure that electricity will continue to be available across the board and reliably in the future?

In this presentation, you will learn how artificial intelligence (AI) can help to control the electricity grid more intelligently and efficiently in order to ensure the stability of our grid and use renewable energies economically.
