A Tribute to Marlene Dietrich: Watch Out for Blonde Women
A Tribute to Marlene Dietrich with Dorit Gäbler
Actress Dorit Gäbler dedicates this evening to actress Marlene Dietrich —in admiration of the legend that Marlene Dietrich created for herself, and in appreciation of some of Dietrich’s eccentricities, even though she was disciplined like no other at work, always considerate of the team she was currently working with, and confident in handling admiration and power.
The songs that Dietrich sang during her guest performances all over the world are still popular today, even though they weren’t written for her—whether it’s “Lili Marleen,” “Paff, der Zauberdrachen,” “Die Antwort, mein Freund, weiß ganz allein der Wind,” or “Sag mir, wo die Blumen sind.”
Her way of moving was often imitated. Dorit Gäbler doesn’t copy her; she draws on the insights of contemporaries she spoke with or from the wealth of publications about this magnificent actress, this “human being,” as Billy Wilder called her.
It is intentional that, just as with Dietrich, some of these songs get under your skin.
