Day and night, you can hear gunshots, dogs barking, the shouts of guards, and the wailing of prisoners.
Over the camp wall, one can occasionally see flames and thick smoke billowing from the crematorium’s chimney. Without a word of farewell, Hedwig’s mother suddenly leaves, but leaves her daughter a letter, which Hedwig, after reading it, angrily tosses into the stove.
When Höss is to be transferred to Oranienburg, the idyllic family life they have built threatens to fall apart. He tries to prevent the transfer but eventually has to tell his wife about it; she, however, refuses to leave the dream home they’ve created. She wants to stay behind with the children, and after the war, they plan to live on a farm, just as they’ve always imagined.
