Do the paintings and prints by Caspar David Friedrich and Edvard Munch touch on the themes of love, melancholy and transience?

By comparing images of women on seascapes and views from the back, the author and dramaturge Holger Teschke explores the question of the extent to which the paintings and prints by Caspar David Friedrich and Edvard Munch touch on the themes of love, melancholy and transience and whether Munch could have been inspired by Friedrich's work.At the same time, he draws connections to literary works from Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué's "Undine" to Henrik Ibsen's "Die Frau vom Meer" and Ingeborg Bachmann's "Undine geht".

About Holger Teschke:
Born in 1958 and raised on the island of Rügen, he went to sea after school until 1980 and then studied drama directing in Berlin. He worked as a director and dramaturge at the Berliner Ensemble and taught as a visiting professor in the USA, Australia and Southeast Asia. From 2010 to 2024, he was a lecturer in theater history and dramaturgy at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin. Teschke writes plays and radio plays, travel books and essays and lives in Berlin and Sassnitz on the island of Rügen.
