The Whisper of the Fields

For his magnum opus *The Peasants*, which was published in four volumes between 1904 and 1909, the Polish writer Władysław Reymont was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1924. The book, written in the vernacular and depicting the life of a peasant community, is virtually unknown here: the only German translation, by Jean Paul d’Ardeschah, dates from 1912.

The directing duo Welchman adapted the novel into a film a few years ago using animated oil paintings. The story follows a peasant girl who is forced to marry a much older, wealthy farmer—despite her love for his son.
