For many people in the GDR, “MOSAIK” was far more than just a comic book: Across generations, the adventures of the Digedags and their successors accompanied readers, offering them unique perspectives on history, culture, and society.
But where did the ideas for these fantastic time travels and adventures come from? What historical events, literary works, and artistic influences lay behind the stories? And what traces of their sources can still be discovered today?
In his book *The Trivial Epic of the GDR—Mosaik and Its Sources*, Dr. Thomas Kramer gets to the bottom of these questions. In 60 entertaining and incisive chapters, he unearths an astonishingly diverse web of historical, literary, and artistic references—sources and inspirations that the creators of *Mosaik* themselves did not always openly acknowledge.

About the Author
Dr. Thomas Kramer studied and earned his doctorate at Humboldt University in Berlin, where he completed his habilitation in 2001. He taught at Humboldt University and now works as an exhibition curator and author in Berlin.
