Biographical Tour with Dr. Angela Pfennig

Stralsund’s most beautiful cemetery is the St. Jürgen Cemetery in the Kniepervorstadt neighborhood. With its two large, shady avenues of linden trees, its ivy-entwined firs and oaks, its arborvitae and yew shrubs, its ancient mounds—half-ruined and overgrown with evergreen plants—and its newer flower-adorned, carefully tended flower beds, it truly provides the perfect setting for its mourning visitors. It is a testament of great cultural and family-historical significance. Joachim Lorenz Struck, 1934

The St. Jürgen Cemetery, established in 1675 on what is now Hainholzstraße, is the final resting place of numerous prominent figures without whose contributions Stralsund’s cultural achievements would be unthinkable. Mayors, nobles, scholars, merchants, doctors, artists, clergy, and military officers who have gained significance beyond the scope of local history rest here. Some of them will be honored during a biographical walking tour.
