A Journey Through the Sahara
With the Tuareg Through the Sahara to the Hermit’s Mountain
Deep in the Algerian desert stands a house, built simply on a high plateau; it has
a single room. A hermitage, a place of retreat. The man who built it was
happy there. He had been drawn deeper and deeper into the desert; now he was completely
alone. At night with the stars, and when he stepped outside early in the morning, he looked out onto an
endless landscape of yellow mountains.
As is often the case with his books, it was once again an image that sparked Wolfgang
Büscher’s desire to go there. A travelogue from the
Sahara—and about Charles de Foucauld, the man who built his house there in the Hoggar
Mountains.
