A hike in the heart of Mecklenburg Switzerland, where the terminal moraine shows itself in all its glory, with a nature park ranger
On the edge of the Mecklenburg Schweiz and Lake Kummerow Nature Park is a real gem: the "Wüste und Glase" nature reserve. Accessible via a single path from Klein Luckow, visitors are immersed in an extraordinary landscape: hilly pastureland, the mysterious Ohgangsee lake, swamps and bushes as well as forests planted with old beech trees. Nevertheless, there are traces of human activity that point to an eventful past.
There is the mighty castle rampart, the age of which is still unknown, or the remains of an old glassworks and split boulders, which point to a former stone-cutting factory. The remains of the walls of a former farmstead can also be seen, while the village of Steinhagen has fallen completely victim to gravel extraction.
During the Ice Age, two glacier tongues collided here and formed a terminal moraine fork. The end moraines are particularly pronounced here and form a large glacier gate. The resulting material, such as sand and gravel, has been extracted by the Langhagen gravel works for over a hundred years.
Anyone interested in this four-hour, challenging hike should meet at the observation tower in Vollrathsruhe on Saturday, April 25 at 10 am. From there, you will travel by car to Klein Luckow before starting the hike on foot through the varied landscape.
A good physical condition is required to take part in this hike. Sturdy footwear and sufficient drinks are recommended. In the event of storms or persistent rain, the hike will unfortunately have to be canceled.
