The "Wüste und Glase" nature reserve - a gem on the edge of the nature park, approx. 4 km
On the edge of the Mecklenburg Schweiz and Lake Kummerow Nature Park is a real gem: the "Wüste und Glase" nature reserve. Access is exclusively via a single path from Klein Luckow, immersing visitors in an extraordinary landscape. This is characterized by hilly pastureland, the mysterious Ohgangsee lake, swamps and bushes as well as forests covered in old beech trees. Despite the remote location, traces of human activity have been preserved, hinting at an eventful past.
Particularly striking is the mighty castle rampart, the age of which is still unknown. There are also the remains of an old glassworks and split boulders that indicate a former stone-cutting factory. The remains of the walls of a former farmstead can also be seen, while the village of Steinhagen has fallen victim to gravel extraction.
The area also has some geological peculiarities: During the Ice Age, two glacier tongues collided here and formed a striking end moraine fork. The end moraines are particularly pronounced here and form a large glacier gate. The resulting material, such as sand and gravel, has been extracted by the Langhagen gravel works for over a hundred years.
