The iron Gustav
Hans Fallada evening with actor Hannes Rittig
Berlin, between 1914 and 1924: Gustav Hackendahl, known as Iron Gustav, is a hackney carriage driver who is tough on himself and others. During the turbulent war and post-war years, his family falls apart and his business can no longer survive alongside the competition from cars. He defiantly turns a dream into reality: he sets off on one last journey - from Berlin to Paris in a hackney carriage. Fallada's novel unfolds the cultural and socio-psychological panorama of the time.
It tells German history "from below" in everyday scenes and impresses with its sharply drawn characters, precise dialog and wide range of settings.
Actor Hannes Rittig lives in Hans Fallada's native town of Greifswald and, in collaboration with the local Fallada Society, has brought several novels to the stage as staged readings. He takes it in turns to slip into the different characters of the novel and brings the world of around 100 years ago to life.
