The history of GDR football and the 1974 World Cup
Lecture with Thomas Lukow
Like everywhere else in the world, football played a major role in the GDR and offered a strong potential for identification. Due to division and political realities, GDR football was quite limited. That is not to say that there were no talented players. Jürgen Croy or Joachim Streich should be mentioned here as examples.
For example, 1. FC Union Berlin was unable to participate in the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1968 as FDGB Cup winners. The speaker explains the reasons for this, as well as the curiosity that 1. FC Hansa Rostock was formed from a Saxon Oberliga team. The special features of the GDR Oberliga are no less interesting. The same goes for the stories of coaches and players who endured various successes and defeats.
Everything to do with the only European Cup won by a GDR team by 1. FC Magdeburg, as well as the GDR's 6th place at the 7974 World Cup. This too is not without its absurdities. The tragic story of Lutz Eigendorf still moves people today. The speaker has researched extensive documents from archives and files on this and all other topics and uses them in a multimedia format.
