The history of Christmas markets in Germany and Europe
Originally an opportunity to buy food reserves and household items before the long winter, markets emerged in the Middle Ages as an additional source of income for craftsmen. At the same time, cultural events were also offered as a social meeting place. This coincided with the Advent season and the subsequent Christmas festival. We will look at which regions in what is now Germany first had such markets and what the regional differences were. The same applies to developments in other European regions. You will also learn a lot about regional peculiarities through stories. The speaker Thomas Luckow will present the most beautiful markets in a multimedia presentation.
