Public Evening Lecture by Professor Dr. Dr. h. c. Dr. h. c. Thomas Kaufmann (Georg-August University of Göttingen, Chair of Church History)
The Croy Tapestry is one of the most fascinating material “remnants” of the Reformation era. Above all, the close connection between political and theological motifs allows us to draw conclusions about fundamental aspects of the “age of confession” in general, and the history of Pomerania and its religious denominations in particular. The aim of this lecture will be to contextualize the object as thoroughly as possible within its historical period.
Thomas Kaufmann is a professor of church history at Georg-August University of Göttingen, abbot of Bursfelde, and one of the world’s leading historians of the Reformation. His research focuses on the history of the church, theology, and Christianity during the Reformation and the early modern period. In 2020, he received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize and was elected a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy. In 2024, he assumed overall academic leadership of the Lower Saxony State and University Library in Göttingen.
