Opening of the special exhibition "The creative power of clay. About the life's work of Carl Giskes"
This year's special exhibition is dedicated to the life's work of natural building pioneer Carl Giskes. The photo exhibition shows selected projects by Carl Giskes and Tierrafino.
Giskes himself will open the exhibition with a talk followed by a tour from 7 pm. Admission is free, but donations for the volunteer-run Lehmmuseum are requested. You are cordially invited to enjoy a snack and juice or beer from 5:30 p.m.
Carl Giskes has written international natural building history with his company Terrafino. From Duisburg to Marrakech to Seoul, there is hardly an extraordinary clay project in which the Amsterdam-based artist, craftsman and inventor has not been involved.
Yet the life of Carl Giskes himself seems to have jumped out of a story. In the 1970s, the pioneer of natural building set off on a seven-year trek across the African continent. There he got to know the "city of clay" Djenné in Mali, which overwhelmed him and in whose clay houses he lived for several years.
In 1977, he traveled back to Germany to work as a student of the artist Joseph Beuys. However, his encounter with clay in Africa did not let him go. With his company Terrafino, he set out to bring the earth's best materials back into interiors and create environments that are aesthetically pleasing, healthy and sustainable at the same time. Visitors to the Clay Museum can now see for themselves just how beautiful "healthy" can be.
