Afternoon Movie
A film adaptation of entertainer Hape Kerkeling’s autobiography. The story begins in the Ruhr region in 1972: Hans-Peter is nine years old and a little chubby, but brimming with self-confidence. This stems not least from his gift for making people laugh—a talent he hones at every opportunity, whether in his Grandma Änne’s grocery store, with the customers as his audience, or at the various gatherings of his party-loving relatives. But this idyllic family life takes a dark turn when Hape’s mother loses her sense of smell and taste due to the effects of chronic sinusitis and falls into a deep depression. His father is at a loss and helpless in the face of his wife’s mental illness. But for Hans-Peter, his mother’s sadness serves as all the greater motivation for his comedic antics.
