Crime comedy by John Buchan and Alfred Hitchcock / Theater der Altmark Stendal
Adapted by Patrick Barlow
based on an original concept by Simon Corble and Nobby Dimon
German version: Bernd Weitmar
London, 1937: Richard Hannay is on the run. And only because he went to the theater. But this visit to the theater has far-reaching consequences. Because when shots are fired in the auditorium, the beautiful Annabella literally falls into his arms. He takes her home with him because she feels threatened. Annabella reveals herself to be an agent with a special mission. She warns Hannay about an organization called "The 39 Steps", for which an unpronounceable place in Scotland plays a decisive role. The next day, Annabella is dead and Hannay is hunted as her suspected murderer. The reluctant hero has no choice but to prove his innocence and save his country and the world at the same time.
Patrick Barlow's stage version of Alfred Hitchcock's 1935 espionage thriller is a turbulent theatrical delight. Four actors slip into many different roles and take us on a crazy, wild hunt for the truth. From the very first shot, it's fast-paced thriller, brilliant comedy, tingling eroticism and exciting adventure.
