Let's see...
How our daughter helped us to see the world with new eyes
When, if not now? What are we waiting for?
To show blind Pauli the world, Josefine Gauck's family of five (granddaughter of Joachim Gauck) takes a sabbatical and goes on a one-year trip around the world.
"Mal gucken" stands for the family's intention to show their five-year-old daughter as much as possible: Pictures, colors, memories, encounters, because no one knows how quickly the girl's eyesight, which is around 7% at the start of the trip, will deteriorate. "Let's see" is also the motto when it comes to uncertain situations and everyday questions from the children along the way - for example, where to sleep at night or where to go the next day.
In order to stick to the budget and get an authentic picture of the country and its people, the family discovers life in the camper, works on organic farms and looks after houses and pets, among other things. In Canada, the USA, New Zealand, Australia and Bali, they immerse themselves in the lives of other people. Pauli and her brothers experience freedom in the treetops of a Canadian climbing forest and discover how soft goat udders feel when they are milked. The author tells a stirring and sensitive story about the realization of the journey, the potential of a life-changing diagnosis and the challenges of being on the road as a family.
A trip around the world, a diagnosis and the chance to create memories for life
Josefine Gauck puts the romantic notion of road trips into perspective and also reflects humorously on the challenge of having to meet the needs of three children aged between five and twelve 24/7 for a year.
"Mal gucken" is more than just a travelogue; it is a stirring and authentic story about how a family realizes their dreams and actively shapes their lives. Josefine Gauck also shows in a touching and hopeful way how a child's life-changing diagnosis can become an opportunity rather than a crisis. In an infectious and impressive way, she conveys the strength that the journey unleashes and how the five of them overcome this great adventure together as a family.
"How we thought we had to show our daughter the world and realized that we needed it much more ourselves."
