The "Sun of the Beach" (SOTB) is a beach tournament for Ultimate Frisbee in Rostock-Warnemünde. Around 250 athletes with their throwing disks are expected to attend the 30th anniversary on the first weekend in August. Ultimate Frisbee is an entertaining team sport without referees and follows the fair play concept "Spirit of the Game". The SOTB is organized by the Rostock frisbee club "Endzonis".
In 1996, the Rostock Frisbee friends "Endzonis" organized the first beach tournament for the sport of "Ultimate Frisbee" in Rostock-Warnemünde. Under the sociable title "Sun of the Beach", or SOTB for short, the tournament grew steadily and is now considered one of the largest Frisbee beach tournaments in Germany. This year, the 30th anniversary of Beach Ultimate in Warnemünde will be celebrated between the Baltic Sea and the Strand Arena. Both athletes and onlookers can look forward to a special event with lots of surprises in Baltic summer weather.
The "Sun of the Beach" will take place on Saturday, 01.08.2026, and Sunday, 02.08.2026, in the Strand Arena Warnemünde. Up to 28 teams from Germany and the neighboring Baltic states will play on five pitches. The group stage will take place on Saturday, while the placement matches and the final will be played on Sunday. Each match lasts around 40 minutes. Admission is free and throwing a frisbee together also costs nothing.
"Warnemünde beach has its own climate zone and is usually very pleasant in summer. But even when it's windy or raining, the game goes on. The Strand Arena Warnemünde offers a great infrastructure for all weather conditions," says Endzonis CEO Gabriel zum Winkel about the special conditions on the beach. He is looking forward to the many national and international teams and seeing familiar faces from the frisbee community again.
A highlight of this year's SOTB is a planned youth showgame on Saturday in the U-14 age group in the Strand Arena. Ultimate is already played in the U-10 age group in Rostock. Youth work, combined with the joy of movement, community and mutual respect, is an important pillar of the club and is run with passionate commitment.
Ultimate Frisbee is a running-intensive team sport and is played with a disc that must be caught in the opponent's end zone in order to score a point. The disc may only be moved by passing it to a teammate. If the disk falls to the ground or an opposing player prevents a pass, the opposing team is in possession of the disk. Five people per team, men and women together, play against each other on the beach, with players being allowed to swap in and out after each point.
The game is played as fairly as possible and without physical contact. As there is no referee, rule violations are reported by the players themselves and punished according to the best possible knowledge of the rules. This principle of fair play is known as the "spirit of the game" and characterizes Ultimate Frisbee right up to the highest leagues and championships.
Endzonis Ultimate Frisbee e. V. was founded in 1993 by three students from the University of Rostock and has since made a name for itself in the German and even European Ultimate scene. The sport of Ultimate not only unites through the joy of the game and the sporting challenge, but also through the strong community beyond the sport.
