Jack Day (organ) and Elham Hamedi (kamantche)
As part of the summer concert series in Waren’s three city churches, Jack Day (organ) and Elham Hamedi (kamantche) will perform their program “J. P. Sweelinck and J. S. Bach in Dialogue with the Orient” at the Georgenkirche on August 13.
Drawing on various Sweelinck variation cycles and movements from Bach’s organ chorale partita “Sei gegrüßet, Jesu gütig” (BWV 768), Elham Hamedi on the Persian kamantche and Jack Day on the restored Friedrich Hermann Lütkemüller organ from 1856 will improvise together, blending Baroque organ artistry with the musical language of the Orient.
The kamantcheh, a bowed string instrument from the Middle Eastern cultural sphere with a range roughly equivalent to that of a violin, produces a unique sound rich in overtones. Elham Hamedi studied kamantcheh and composition in Tehran and Berlin and now works on intercultural projects that bridge improvised and contemporary music. She previously performed in Waren in 2025 with the Kantatenchor in the concert “Dvořák Interkulturell.”
Jack Day is the cantor at Berlin’s Luisenkirche and is known for the DLF program “Orgel & Lyrik.” He is a versatile and dedicated musician and organist who completed his training in music, musicology, church music, and organ improvisation in Manchester, Cambridge, Tübingen, Trossingen, and Stuttgart. He gained his first experience as a cantor from 2008 to 2011 in Waren an der Müritz. His concert activities in Germany and abroad have taken him to venues such as the Bach Festival in Gdańsk and the Organ Cinema Festival in Lubin.
