This evening, theater students from hmt Rostock will present two original theater productions that were developed as part of their studies and have already been performed at hmt Rostock’s Urknall Festival.

In this production of Peter Handke’s “Kaspar,” four performers prompt one another to speak and are themselves prompted to speak. Handke’s play draws on the historical figure of Kaspar Hauser, who appeared as a young man in Nuremberg in 1828 and possessed almost no means of verbal expression. The production explores how language shapes people and subjects them to the social order. In doing so, it emphasizes the linguistic precision of the text and combines it with performative elements and music.

Are you avid fans of Gorky’s plays? Interesting. Maxim Gorky, “the Bitter One” (actually Alexei Maximovich Peshkov), was a Russian writer, and considering his life circumstances, it becomes clear that his life was bitter—a reality he partially reflected in his plays. In a sensory-overload, 35-act frenzy, directed and performed by Johann Christian Gomolka and Julia Pingel, we plunge—at least in part—into the story of Gorky’s petty bourgeoisie, offering Gorky’s restless soul a moment of respite and a bit of amusement—or do we? An evening dedicated to exploring and highlighting the controversies of rich vs. poor, young vs. old, minimalism vs. maximalism, as well as spoken theater vs. performative theater.
