Lecture: "The wall paintings in the great hall of St. Katharinen Monastery. Speaker: Leonard John, qualified restorer, Stralsund
An event organized by the Stralsunder Geschichtsverein e.V. in cooperation with the Gesellschaft für pommersche Geschichte, Altertumskunde und Kunst e.V. and the Kreisvolkshochschule V-R.
Mr. John is a freelance qualified restorer in the fields of art technology, conservation and restoration of architectural monuments. As part of the extensive renovation of the Stralsund Museum from 2024 to 2026, the wall paintings in the vaults in the large hall (previously known as the Remter) were restored.
The restoration was carried out by the Lenzner, Gramann and John consortium. The medieval paintings had already been painted over several times since their discovery almost 150 years ago. The originals can now be experienced again thanks to extensive uncovering. The new findings from the restoration work will be presented to the public for the first time in this lecture.
