Storm surges - origin and effects: Lecture by Ingo Zander
Since the devastating storm surge of 1872, storm surge heights and their circumstances have been systematically documented - to this day, this event forms the benchmark for all coastal protection measures. Ingo Zander takes you on an exciting journey through time along the Baltic Sea coast: only a memorial stone remains today of the village of Damerow, which was washed away, and the last major breakthrough between Koserow and Zempin in December 1913 also shapes the history of the region.
One of the most severe storm surges in recent history occurred in November 1995. But how do such natural events actually occur? What dangers do they pose - and when can we expect the next major flood?
The lecture provides insights into historical events, explains the scientific basis and shows how the coast and people can prepare for future extreme weather.
