A historical account of Gerhard Hauptmann's final journey, from his lying in state at Stralsund City Hall to his funeral on Hiddensee, told through eyewitness accounts, documents, photographs, and film clips.
To Whom Does the Poet Belong? Marking the 80th anniversary of Gerhard Hauptmann’s lying in state at the Hanseatic City of Stralsund—a Hanseatic city—before his final voyage and his burial on his beloved island of Hiddensee.
This reading traces the course of the extraordinary memorial service in Stralsund—from the arrival of the coffin, through the lying-in-state at City Hall, to the final voyage to Hiddensee. Drawing on eyewitness accounts, documents, photographs, and film clips, the event explores what happens to a public figure when politics begins to co-opt them for its own purposes.
