Staged Reading & Discussion: “Coming Out” (1989)
Through his relationship with Tanja and his encounter with Matthias, the young teacher Philipp embarks on a journey of self-discovery that calls his entire life into question: He is in love. COMING OUT (Director: Heiner Carow, Screenplay: Wolfram Witt) explores the conflict between societal expectations and one’s own identity. As the first and only feature film from the GDR to openly address homosexuality, it premiered on November 9, 1989, in East Berlin—on the evening the Berlin Wall fell.
Three performers read and embody the characters, switching between roles and narrative levels, and distill the material into a stripped-down staged reading combining text, performance, and musical and visual elements.
Following the approximately 60-minute reading, there will be a Q&A session with the audience.
