Northern German Spinning Championship at the Bechelsdorfer Schulzenhof on September 19, 2026, in Schönberg
It has become a cherished tradition to hold the North German Spinning Championship in September at the Bechelsdorfer Schulzenhof in Schönberg. People gather to watch the hardworking spinners as they compete to spin the longest thread from a specified amount of raw wool in 90 minutes. This open North German Spinning Championship, held under the patronage of our state’s Minister of Agriculture, is a true competition. It’s a wonderful sight every year, especially because everyone is so skilled at their craft. Afterward, the spun threads are measured. However, the award ceremony doesn’t take place until after another contest on the so-called “wedding wheel.” A team of three people sits together and tries to spin the most meters. One person pedals, while the others spin. The patron for this event is Tino Schomann, District Administrator of the Northwest Mecklenburg District. You can see the joy on everyone’s faces at being here today at the Schulzenhof in Bechelsdorf.
This year, on September 19, we’re turning the Spinning Championship into a festival in collaboration with the association “Sagen- und Märchenstraße MV.” And no such event would be complete without a touch of fairy-tale magic. Starting September 10, you’ll have the chance to solve a fairy-tale riddle, and on the day of the spinning championship at the Bechelsdorf Schulzenhof, you can drop your answer into the mailbox at the witch’s house. There are sure to be some fairy-tale-like small prizes to be won. In addition, storyteller Birgit Küchenmeister will be sharing legends and fairy tales. The “Montagsspinner” will be there, and the well-known Low German storyteller Peter Wendt from Schwerin will provide musical entertainment. Numerous vendors of regional products will be at the Bechelsdorf Schulzenhof, offering honey, ceramics, wicker baskets, wool, and handmade items both large and small. In addition to the Purebred Rabbit Breeders’ Association from Schönberg, “Frau Wockensolle,” Cornelie Müller-Gödecke from the “Traditional Textiles” working group of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Heritage Association. She’ll demonstrate braiding and weaving and offer a hands-on braiding workshop. There’s something for everyone. Plenty of food and drink will be available. There’s all sorts of things to discover, snack on, and try out. This day is all about advising, playing, crafting, listening, and having fun.
