Discussion with Mithu Sanyal ("Identitti") and Ijoma Mangold ("Das deutsche Krokodil") | Moderation: Ulrika Rinke (Literaturhaus Rostock)
We are familiar with the buzzwords and the perceived irreconcilability surrounding "identity politics", "backlash", "cancel culture", wokeness and gendering, not to mention family images.
Progressive vs. conservative is the core opposition of a charged culture war. It now seems unimaginable that such opposing world views could be discussed in a committed and yet comparatively calm manner - we are optimistic. This is also due to the two guests, who do not stand for extremes, but rather for progressive and conservative attitudes within the German-speaking cultural scene. How they explain these attitudes, how we can talk across real or perceived divides, understand and respect each other: That's what we want to talk about, that's what we want to try out.
Mithu Sanyal, born in Düsseldorf in 1971, is a cultural scientist, journalist and writer. She works on the topics of feminism, racism, pop culture and post-colonialism. She published the novels "Identitti" (shortlisted for the German Book Prize 2021) and "Antichristie" (2024) and was awarded the Heinrich Mann Prize for Essay Writing in March 2026.
Ijoma Mangold, born in Heidelberg in 1971, is a literary critic, cultural correspondent for DIE ZEIT and author. He was awarded the Berlin Prize for Literary Criticism in 2007 and published his autobiographical book "Das deutsche Krokodil" in 2017 and "Der innere Stammtisch. A political diary".
