"Silent Friend" is an extraordinary and critically acclaimed film.
In the heart of the botanical gardens of the medieval university town of Marburg stands a majestic ginkgo tree. For over a hundred years, it has been a silent witness - an observer of quiet, profound changes in the lives of three people.
In 2020, a neuroscientist from Hong Kong (Tony Leung), who researches the cognitive development of babies, dares to conduct an unusual experiment with the ancient tree.
1972 a young student (Enzo Brumm) undergoes an inner transformation - triggered by the concentrated observation of a simple geranium.
In 1908, the university's first female student (Luna Wedler) follows her passion for photography - and discovers the hidden patterns of the universe through the lens of her camera.
At the center of the film is the ginkgo tree, which was planted in 1832. But anyone expecting esoteric observations about the soul life of trees is mistaken - "Silent Friend" is not boring in any of its 147 minutes. It captivates the viewer with its psychological aesthetics and poetic narrative style; it's a movie that feels like a dream or a successful psychoanalytical lesson.
It deals with everything that makes up human life on three different time levels over the course of a century: relationships, communication, sexuality, curiosity, research, development and much more. With its special approach, Silent Friend provides a counterpoint to current world events, which seem to have gone off the rails
