On 12.11.2025 at 6 pm we celebrate the opening of the exhibition "Renate U. Schürmeyer - immer wieder" in the series "CORNER KICK_OFF: [Eckanstoss]". The exhibition will be introduced by art historian Annekathrin Siems.
Renate U. Schürmeyer - again and again
The current exhibition at KUNSTraum SCHWERIN features two groups of works by Renate U. Schürmeyer, "dosiert_konserviert" and "Schmerz". Constant repetitions over long periods of time and their associated changes play a central role in her working method. At the same time, questions about recent German history are posed, as in the group of works "dosiert_konsveriert". The work is dedicated to the "so-called guest workers" who came to West Germany in the early 1960s and often performed poorly paid assembly line work. They brought their "patterns" from home, which appeared on wallpaper, fabrics or tiles. For the work, Schürmeyer used the lids of animal food bowls as a metaphor for modern mass-produced goods, drew ornaments on them, sewed them together and assembled them into a picture.
On the group "Pain": What can we endure? How differently is pain perceived? Paper bowls filled with metal tips between fragile and hard can be perceived as a metaphor for enduring pain.
Vita (selection)
Renate U. Schürmeyer (born 1957 in Berlin) is a visual artist living in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. She studied from 1980 to 1984 at the Hochschule für Künste im Sozialen, Ottersberg, graduating with a diploma. Since 1988 she has exhibited nationally and internationally in solo and group exhibitions. Schürmeyer has received scholarships from the federal government's Neustart Kultur program in 2021, 2019 and 2012, and working scholarships from the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in 2010. In 2011 she was on a travel grant at the Virginia Center for Creative Arts, USA. In 2024 she received the Art Prize of the Nordkirche, in 2021 the Art Prize of Northwest Mecklenburg "Art in times of Corona". Since 2015, she has initiated participatory art projects such as "Schutzraum Erinnern" in Schlagsdorf and Lübeck-Schlutup and "Hellersdorfer Picknickdecken" in Berlin.

Exhibition series CORNER KICK_OFF: [Eckanstoss]
The exhibitions at KUNSTraum SCHWERIN focus on a different theme each year. In 2025, the KUNSTraum SCHWERIN is presenting the exhibition series CORNER KICK_OFF: [Eckanstoss] with five exhibitions.
The layout of the exhibition space with its open glass fronts on the corner of Platz der Jugend invites visitors to encounter the contemporary art on display. In 2025, there will be various presentations designed to encourage visitors to engage with language and form in a direct encounter with contemporary art. The boundaries between inside and outside will blur and art will be brought into the public space at / in the corner, attracting and inspiring locals, guests and art lovers alike. As a "meeting place for art", the KUNSTraum SCHWERIN presents diverse, surprising and exciting exhibitions that are constantly seeking to inspire new ideas.
The KUNSTraum SCHWERIN
The office of the Berufsverband der Bildenden Künstlerinnen und Künstler in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is located at Goethestraße 15 on Platz der Jugend in Schwerin. The KUNSTraum SCHWERIN is connected to the BBK M-V office: KUNSTraum SCHWERIN, an exhibition space for contemporary visual art and a place for cultural encounters and exchange, opened in Schwerin in 2021.
In the conception of the exhibition program, the BBK M-V follows the basic principle of "art in urban space". Open, communicative and inspiring, the KUNSTraum SCHWERIN with its exhibitions of contemporary art, the diversity of artistic forms of expression and various event formats sets a new aesthetic and cultural focal point in the State capital Schwerin.
