With Renate Bergmann, there’s no time for small talk—it’s time to get things done. The old village tavern in Spreeweide isn’t getting enough customers. The former bridal school was affectionately called the “Kuppelkrug.” What times those were, before “Ossiporose,” when she and Ilse used to cut a fine figure on the dance floor in their dance class. Something has to be done about this! What if the mayor’s daughter, Brummer, moved her café—which is too small—there? Then everyone in Spreeweide could enjoy some delicious pastries, with plenty of room even for walkers and the like. The “Online Granny” is taking on the challenge: with a woman’s homemade waffles and hand-brewed coffee beans.

Renate Bergmann

“Germany’s most famous Twitter Granny” (Bild) has diabetes and “Ossiporose,” sleeps under an electric blanket, and says she “didn’t survive the war to now eat soy-based meat substitutes”: Renate Bergmann, 82, from Berlin, is a fictional character created by author Torsten Rohde. The first book, “I’m Not Sweet, I Just Have Sugar,” was published in 2014. That bestseller has since been followed by over twenty more, equally successful books. Every day, more than 100,000 fans follow Renate Bergmann’s adventures on Instagram, Bluesky, and Facebook, and tens of thousands have already attended her book readings.

Torsten Rohde

Born in 1974, he studied business administration in Brandenburg/Havel and worked as a controller. The idea came to him at family gatherings: to post the nuggets of wisdom he’d overheard from elderly ladies on a social media account. This led to his first book in 2014, which has since been followed by well over twenty more. “From accountant to author”—his @RenateBergmann account became an internet phenomenon, and his books under this name spent several months on the bestseller lists. Torsten Rohde lives in Berlin.
