Everything back to square one": In their latest book, Max Czollek and Hadija Haruna-Oelker put Germany's self-image as a country coming to terms with the past to the test
Reading & discussion as part of the exhibition "totenstill" by Dirk Reinartz
with Max Czollek (author) and Thomas Werner (Rostock Cultural Office)
"Alles auf Anfang": In their latest book, Max Czollek and Hadija Haruna-Oelker scrutinize Germany's self-image as the world champion of reappraisal. Has the German culture of remembrance failed when right-wing populists win elections, right-wing extremist crimes are insufficiently investigated and "Never again is now" degenerates into a phrase? How can remembrance ensure that the past does not repeat itself?
With his books and essays (including "Versöhnungstheater", 2023),Max Czollek is considered an important voice against anti-Semitism, racism and discrimination of all kinds and for a pluralistic culture of remembrance. He is co-editor of the magazine "Jalta - Positionen zur jüdischen Gegenwart". Together with Hadija Haruna-Oelker, he hosts the remembrance podcast "Trauer & Turnschuh" .
