AUSSCHUSS - An extraordinary Baltic Sea novel about work, safety & responsibility in a headwind.
Dr. Renate Mayer takes her audience to a place where wind power is not only a symbol of the energy transition, but also hard work: the offshore wind farms of the Baltic Sea. A month of research on Rügen, interviews with technicians and her own occupational safety projects for around 700 offshore professionals form the basis of her novel AUSSCHUSS - and of this special evening. The Neu-Ulm native's unusual debut novel gives the general public a glimpse of the people who make the difference between everyday life and nightmare in the complex marine working environment.
In a mixture of visual presentation and reading, Mayer tells of occupational safety under extreme conditions, of responsibility, team spirit and the psychological stresses in workplaces that are vulnerable as critical infrastructure and lie in the middle of current geopolitical tension zones. Udo, the hero of her story, is responsible for safety - and yet rarely receives applause. But at a moment when events in the port of Mukran come to a head and force those involved to pause for thought, the tide turns.
The evening is complemented by impressive photographs of offshore facilities by Ulrich Mertens, who specializes in the energy transition.
An evening about work, safety and people with responsibility in a headwind - exciting, highly topical and different from a traditional reading.
