Adventurous travel talk about a unique extreme run across Europe.
After cycling around the world, kayaking on the Lena and crossing Kamchatka, Ronald Prokein undertook his fourth sporting goal tour. He was the first person ever to cross Europe in midsummer on foot - from Istanbul to the North Cape. Having never run a marathon before and with no competition times, the Rostock native ran 5,004 km in 93 days, in one of the hottest summers in the history of weather, accompanied by his German shepherd and a photographer who accompanied him in a Wartburg and later in a Ford. The journey took him through eleven countries: Turkey, Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Norway. Ronald Prokein covered 60 to 80 km per day, slept by the side of the road at night, never in a tent and lost six toenails on the trip. In Sweden, the Rostock native saved himself by jumping to the side when a car almost ran him over. In Serbia, the run was in danger of failing due to shin inflammation. Between the wild heights of the Balkans and the vastness of Lapland, the adventurer met Sinti and Roma, Danube fishermen and indigenous Scandinavians. He encountered poverty and prosperity, walked through tranquil villages and pulsating metropolises, along highways and deserted paths. Emaciated, plagued by heat, weakness and breathing problems, Ronald Prokein finally reached the Norwegian North Cape at the end of August.
