The reading takes us into a New Year's Eve full of surprises: After a heated argument, the protagonist spends New Year's Eve with her friends
Natalja Sharandak reads the story “A Little New Year’s Gift” from her collection *Die holde Kunst* — the first collection of Russian literature devoted exclusively to love between women— at St . Nicholas Church in Rostock. The stories are based on the experiences of a circle of female friends in St. Petersburg and tell of solidarity, courage, and the desire for a self-determined life —at a time when homosexuality was taboo and persecuted in the Soviet Union.
The reading takes us into a New Year’s Eve full of surprises: After a heated argument, the protagonist spends the turn of the year surrounded by her friends. When an unknown woman suddenly sits down next to her, the evening takes an unexpected turn.
Afterward, Natalja Sharandak will discuss the creation of her book and the current situation of the LGBTIQ+ community in Russia. An evening of literature, memory, freedom, and the power of personal stories.
We look forward to an inspiring evening and to her visit!
