Few cultural battles are fought as bitterly as the one over gender roles. Why is that? How can understanding be achieved on this battlefield, which is home to wounded on all sides? What positions can be taken publicly today without being canceled? Matthias Politycki, author, essayist and chairman of PEN Germany, has published a collection of essays entitled "Mann gegen Mann - Von alten und neuen Tugenden" (Man against man - of old and new virtues) in which he asks whether some traditionally masculine characteristics are not worth preserving in the face of the "turn of an era" and radical upheavals within liberal societies. He talks to Sophia Fritz, author of the essay "Toxische Weiblichkeit" (2024), in which she explores the point at which learned "feminine" patterns become potentially harmful. How much negative, how much useful is there in gender roles? What do they have to do with our ideas of society?
