How do we get back into conversation, how much difference can we tolerate in polarized times? Together with the Volkstheater, we are seeking dialog with representatives of opposing positions in the "wieder sprechen" series. Disagreeing with each other is expressly encouraged, but at the same time it's about listening to the other person and accepting their positions, even if you don't share them. But how does this actually work? The kick-off event focuses on the prerequisites for a successful conversation.
Listening, being heard, having a dialog at eye level - these are buzzwords of our time, formulas of political rhetoric. What does it mean to really listen, to question one's own convictions? Why have people not listened to victims of sexual abuse or warnings about climate change for so long? Bernhard Pörksen shows which mechanisms prevent people from listening - whether in private or in public. And he presents approaches and methods that enable openness and empathetic listening. The key question: How do you reach those you can no longer reach?
Polarization is by no means a state of emergency, but necessary in a democracy, says sociologist Nils C. Kumkar. What distinguishes the current, "freewheeling" polarization of right-wing populism from "normal" polarization, and how can its mechanisms be broken through - if at all?
