From Extinction Rebellion to The Last Generation: contrary to modern optimism about progress, the climate movement seems to be imbued with an apocalyptic consciousness. Looking into the future and pointing to the future consequences of climate change are intended to mobilize people and initiate a change for the better. However, like moralizing criticism of consumption, technocratic optimism or sheer resignation, this reaction to climate change has blind spots. What social conditions need to be addressed in order to counteract climate change in the future?
Alexandra Schauer is a research associate at the Institute for Social Research in Frankfurt am Main. She deals with destructive ways of dealing with crises and has examined the disappearance of political ideas in her book "Mensch ohne Welt" (Suhrkamp 2023).
Jakob Hoffmann is a founding member of the Gesellschaft für kritische Bildung e. V. He has edited the anthologies "Klimawandel und Gesellschaftskritik" and "Erinnern als höchste Form des Vergessens?" and writes on current issues in social theory.
