Lecture by Rainer Neumann, theologian, Greifswald
Event organized by the Stralsunder Geschichtsverein e.V. in cooperation with the Gesellschaft für pommersche Geschichte, Altertumskunde und Kunst e.V. and the Kreisvolkshochschule V-R
The wave of plague that ravaged Europe from 1708 to 1714 was the last occurrence of this pandemic, killing a total of several million people. It was widely perceived as a punishment from God. The plague kept coming in waves and it was not yet known how the disease, which quickly led to death, was transmitted. (...) The first measures were correct, however, and ships arriving in Venice were kept in the roadstead for 40 days, the so-called quarantine. In 1709, the people of Stettin issued a plague ordinance with further measures and explanations. Much can be linked to the measures against COVID-19. The Greifswald theologian Rainer Neumann will report on the understanding and control of the epidemic in comparison to Corona.
Free of charge for members of both associations (guests €7.50). Registration via the VHS Stralsund is recommended.
