On September 13, Barth will open ten doors that are usually kept closed. Listed historic buildings will open their interiors to the public, and there will be guided tours and a free ride on the Darßbahn. Admission is free everywhere.
On September 13, 2026, Open Monument Day® will take place nationwide. The 2026 theme is “NetzWERKE: Monuments & Infrastructure,” with a focus on buildings that highlight utilities, transportation, and connectivity. The event has been coordinated by the German Foundation for Monument Protection since 1993, with thousands of sites across Germany opening their otherwise closed doors to the public. In Barth, there are ten stops in the old town.
The Baroque residential and commercial building at Fischerstraße 10 is owned by the German Foundation for Monument Protection and will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., offering guided tours of the construction site. At the Kornspeicher, located at Badstüberstraße 30, there will even be tours of the entire building on two days—Saturday, September 12, and Sunday, September 13—from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., departing every half hour and on the hour. Tours begin at the “Kleinod” shop in the Kornspeicher.
St. Marien on Papenstraße is open for tours of the church and tower from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Anyone wishing to climb the church tower must register in advance at the Lesecafé in the Lila Haus. A free guided tour of the church begins at 3 p.m. at the north portal.
The Papenhof at Papenstraße 10 is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; a guided tour begins at 10 a.m. At the Vineta Museum, Lange Straße 16, the museum’s support association will lead a tour of the exhibition at 11 a.m.; the museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Dammtor is the last remaining historic city gate and is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Fangelturm is open from 10 a.m. to noon and from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The Adlige Fräuleinstift at Hunnenstraße 1 is part of the city tour and can only be visited as part of that tour. At the Barth Bible Center, Sundische Straße 52, the doors are open from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.; there is a guided tour of the Bible Garden at 3 p.m. At the Barther Dampfmaschinen e.V. (Barther Steam Engines Association), located at Am Wirtschaftshafen 4, you can view historical machinery from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
If you’d rather see the city from a train, take the free city tour on the Darßbahn, which runs all day. A free guided tour of the city also starts at 1:30 p.m. at Bogislawplatz.
All of the locations mentioned are accessible without an admission fee.
