Open Monument Day at Rehna Monastery: AMEISENSTRASSE Microtheater, altar tour, and guided tour of the art and themed exhibition “ORTSZEIT – Maurinmühle”

On Sunday, September 13, Open Monument Day will take place once again. This year, the monastic town of Rehna, together with the Rehna Monastery Association, is using its program to build a bridge between nature, culture, and art in a variety of ways. In addition to touring the monastery grounds, visitors can enjoy guided tours and theater performances at the Rehna Monastery. All activities are free of charge on this day. Donations are appreciated.

Starting at 11 a.m., visitors can explore the Monastery Museum, featuring the permanent exhibition “Premonstratensian Nuns in Rehna—A Medieval Monastery in Mecklenburg” as well as the art and thematic exhibition “ORTSZEIT—Maurinmühle.” For children, there will be an audio tour of the monastery grounds featuring Mona the Bat.

Starting at 4 p.m., there will be a guided tour of the art and thematic exhibition “ORTSZEIT – Maurinmühle” led by project director, curator, and artist Annette Czerny. Under the Nazi regime, the Maurinmühle complex was turned into a children’s home and a “care facility for foreign children.” Among others, children and infants of Polish, Ukrainian, and Russian forced laborers were housed there and deliberately neglected. The physical traces of these cruel and deadly conditions at Maurinmühle were later erased by the GDR regime, and eyewitnesses and their descendants remained silent. The exhibition picks up where scholarly research leaves off and approaches these events on an emotional level through the perspectives of the artists. The guided tour lasts approximately 45 minutes.

Starting at 5:00 p.m., there will be a guided tour of the altar in the Rehna monastery church. Impressive depictions from biblical history—carved into the central section and side panels—have been preserved from the original late-Gothic double-winged altarpiece. In the mid-19th century, during restoration work, the altar was redesigned into the current neo-Gothic composite structure. However, a model allows visitors to easily reconstruct the altar’s original form and function. The tour lasts approximately 45 minutes.

Starting at 6:30 p.m., visitors can enjoy eight different miniature theater performances (Mikrotheater AMEISENSTRASSE) at the Rehna Monastery. Each performance lasts between 5 and 10 minutes and is staged several times throughout the evening. All the artists tell stories from the perspective of our small animal and plant world. The Rehna Monastery Association provides food and drinks for all guests.

This event is presented by the monastery town of Rehna in cooperation with the Rehna Monastery Association (Klosterverein Rehna e.V.). We look forward to your visit!
