Historic Buildings Open Their Doors A Fun-Filled Program for the Whole Family

On Sunday, September 13, 2026, Güstrow—the city of Barlach—invites you to Open Monument Day on Domplatz from 11:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

This year’s event is dedicated to the special anniversary “800 Years of the Güstrow Cathedral.” There’s plenty to discover around Domplatz: historic buildings will open their doors, guided tours will offer special insights, and a colorful program for the whole family awaits at the event site.

At the John-Brinckman-Gymnasium, there are several opportunities to get to know the former cathedral school better. The film “Die neue-alte Domschule” (The New-Old Cathedral School) by Malte Pell will be shown. In addition, students will take guests on guided tours to explore the building.
The “Discoveries at the Cathedral School” guided tours begin at 12:00 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 3:00 p.m., and 4:30 p.m. The high school’s bake sale will provide light refreshments.
The Lühesche Haus, located at Domplatz 16 (Galerie Rambow), is also open for exploration on this day. Guided tours take place at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Additional activities and guided tours in historic buildings around Domplatz are currently being coordinated and will be added.

City Tour “Witnesses to Brick Gothic”

Those who wish to delve even deeper into Güstrow’s history can join the city tour guide at 2:00 p.m. The meeting point is on Domplatz by the oak tree.
The tour takes you through the historic area surrounding Cathedral Square and also includes a guided tour of the cathedral titled “Witnesses to Brick Gothic.”

Registration is required for the city tour: either at the Güstrow-Info office on Franz-Parr-Platz, by phone at 03843 / 681023, or by email at info@guestrow-tourismus.de

Experience History on Cathedral Square

History also comes to life right on the event grounds. An exhibition is dedicated to the development of Cathedral Square and its iconic historic architecture. Under the title “New Next to Old,” Domplatz 18 will also be featured.

To coincide with the “800 Years of the Cathedral” anniversary, there will also be a special spring onion promotion on Domplatz. More on this coming soon.

In addition to history and architecture, there’s plenty of entertainment as well. THE PIANOMAN Klaus Porath will keep the mood lively all day long, and host Stefan Haschler will provide updates on the day’s highlights.
Wildpark-MV will be there with arts-and-crafts activities for children, and the Landessportbund’s “Sportmobil” will bring a variety of games and recreational activities for younger guests to Domplatz.
A night watchman will also be on site, adding to the special historical atmosphere.
