26th Neubrandenburg Summer Film Festival, July 31, 2026 – August 9, 2026
In the 1950s, a copywriter creates the character of Betty Bossi, a cook—and becomes an icon herself. With plenty of humor and retro charm, the film tells the true story of a woman who was ahead of her time.
Switzerland 2025, Director: Pierre Monnard, Runtime: 110 minutes
Starring: Sarah Spale, Martin Vischer, Thomas Douglas, and others.
In 1956, the shy Swiss copywriter Emmi Creola invents the fictional character “Betty Bossi” as part of a campaign for cooking oil—and strikes a chord with the spirit of the times. Emmi may be skilled at her typewriter, but she’s no cook. It’s only through a deal with Italian chefs that she turns the column—featuring lively recipes—into a success. A marketing idea turns into the “nation’s cook and housewife,” and Emmi becomes an unwitting public figure. For Switzerland loves Betty and soon demands a real face. Reluctantly, she takes on the role of her creation and also appears in public and in advertising clips.
