For more than five decades, the Bundeswehr Big Band has been synonymous with musical excellence, rousing performances, and the unmistakable sound of a modern big band—all while performing in uniform.
Under the direction of bandleader Lieutenant Colonel Tobias Terhardt, it ranks among the most significant and exciting big bands of our time. This ensemble plays a special role even within the Bundeswehr’s military music service: Instead of marches or classical orchestral repertoire, the Bundeswehr Big Band focuses on a wide variety of contemporary popular music styles—presented in a multimedia stage show that delights audiences and organizers alike.
What makes these musicians from North Rhine-Westphalia so unique is their dual mission: They are Germany’s musical ambassadors and, at the same time, the Bundeswehr’s musical calling card—professional, passionate, and personable.
There is no musical uniformity here. Each of the 24 instrumentalists has been handpicked, trained at the most renowned universities for modern music, and is a master of their craft. When the Bundeswehr Big Band takes the stage, an energetic sound fills the air, blending all elements of music into an unforgettable experience. Every concert becomes a show full of surprises, emotions, and the joy of performing—an invitation to leave everyday life behind for a few hours.
