When many women in Iceland walked off the job in 1975, refusing to work or look after the children, they brought their country to a standstill and catapulted Iceland to the "best place in the world to be a woman". The film tells this story on the 50th anniversary of the strike. With film discussion.
When 90 percent of Icelandic women walked off the job and out of their homes on an autumn morning in 1975, refusing to work, cook or look after the children, they brought their country to a standstill and catapulted Iceland to the "best place in the world to be a woman".
Narrated for the first time by the women themselves and featuring animation, A DAY WITHOUT WOMEN is subversive and unexpectedly funny. "We loved our chauvinistic pigs," recalls one of the activists, "we just wanted to change them a little!"
The film was released on the 50th anniversary of the strike in 2025 and, with its message about the collective power of women to change their society, encourages us to rethink what is possible.
The film will be followed by a moderated discussion with Dr. Christine Braun (Equal Opportunities Officer for the Vorpommern-Rügen district) and Beatrix Hegenkötter (Member of Parliament).
The audience is invited to actively participate in the discussion.
Admission free.
