A Turbulent Christmas Revue by Sandra Keck
“From the cheerful Christmas baking to the contemplative ‘Adeste Fideles,’ it seems like a long way! But in our little Christmas revue, *O du fröhliche…*, the songs follow one after another and are sure to put young and old alike in the Christmas spirit.”
Sandra Keck
In the venerable Schwerin Cathedral, where organ music usually sets the tone for the pre-Christmas season, a Low German Christmas gala will be performed for the first time this Christmas Eve—after all, “Plattdütsch in de Kark” is all the rage right now!
No wonder, then, that the ambitious choir director—whose energy oscillates between that of a Broadway diva and an overexcited reindeer—has put together an extraordinary revue designed to get the church pews rocking. But with a choir whose members are as diverse as a colorful platter, the pre-Christmas rehearsal period is anything but contemplative. There’s the former opera singer who performs songs about punch and Päpernoet with the solemnity of a Wagnerian hero; the notorious latecomer who actually has no interest in music at all and only shows up because he’s smitten with the young choir member with the warm, angelic voice. It will probably take a dash of Christmas magic to conjure up a charming premiere out of this chaos.
However, the Low German audience has already been thoroughly enchanted by the past two Christmas revues, which is why this year, too, —all good things come in threes—Sandra Keck will once again take up her pen and sit in the director’s chair to create an evening full of bubbling energy, rousing catchy tunes, and even a bit of kitsch, where singing along is not only allowed but strongly encouraged.
So, are you in?
