When you really take a close look, the current state of the world is, unfortunately, anything but heartening. And yet we started out with such hope for the future. How can people live together in peace, poetry, and joy? What beautiful things are we capable of? How rich is life when you love? How many dreams were there of a life beyond war and exploitation? What remains of that urge to make the world a little kinder and more peaceful? Perhaps, for a change, we can find a positive narrative of what it means to be human. It would be wonderful if we could treat one another with kindness in this world. We’ll venture into the depths of history in search of poetry and a zest for life—and perhaps even discover a thing or two more in the historic songs of old East German bands.
