A night of “Ostalgia” movies at summer camp. There’s not much more to say about either *Dirty Dancing* or *Seven Freckles*. Both films are, in the broadest sense, about summer camps, though the first is more of a resort. Here, rich, beautiful, and cosmopolitan people from New York enjoy luxury vacations while being served and entertained by the working class. The second is a socialist summer camp in the tradition of German youth associations. One is about Latin American dance; the other, about educational theater. What they have in common is that there are rules and boundaries that the films’ main characters flout. Both films are also about coming of age, love, and sexuality. Both films premiered in the GDR at the Kino International on Karl-Marx-Allee (in 1989 and 1978) and went on to captivate an audience of millions nationwide.
